Jakarta — Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq urged all stakeholders to intensify sorting to reduce organic waste ending up at the final disposal facility (landfill), including Suwung Landfill in Bali. In a statement confirmed from Jakarta on Thursday, the minister stressed the importance of sorting in waste management. ‘By encouraging waste sorting as well. If self-management does not want to transport waste, and if it is not sorted then there should be synergy rather than blame,’ he said. Speaking during a visit to Badung Regency, Bali today, Hanif noted that Suwung Landfill is already in a heavily polluted state and that closing it without further planning could provoke social unrest; as a result the site continues to receive both organic and inorganic waste. Previously, the Ministry of Environment targeted closing and stopping open dumping at Suwung by March 2026. Specifically for Badung Regency, he said they would provide wood shredders to address wood waste and an incinerator to process wood fragments. ‘We, together with the Governor of Bali, will provide technical operating considerations temporarily while awaiting the environmental clearance that will be used,’ said Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
