Environment Minister: From April Organic Waste Will No Longer Enter Suwung Landfill
Badung, Bali — Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq announced that from April 2026 organic waste will no longer be dumped at Suwung Landfill in Bali as part of efforts to accelerate waste management transformation. ‘We want Suwung Landfill to be relieved of pressure; what goes there should be inorganic waste that does not pose an additional burden of pollution, so in April only inorganic waste may enter Suwung; organic waste must be disposed of upstream,’ the Environment Minister said during a coastal clean-up drive at Jimbaran Beach on Thursday. He urged local governments, particularly Denpasar City and Badung Regency, to complete sorting of organic waste at source, using facilities such as modern treatment facilities and composters. This habit must be formed within one month because Suwung Landfill will still accept organic waste only until the end of March 2026. The policy also included a concession from the ministry; initially they had permitted Suwung to operate only until the end of February 2026. From the start of April, the Environment Ministry will monitor to ensure no organic waste enters Suwung. Minister Hanif called on Bali’s local governments to be firm with the public and self-managed operators, and not hesitate to refuse unsorted waste. ‘If unsorted, the waste should not be transported and must not enter Suwung Landfill, so we all must strive to sort waste upstream,’ he said. He reminded that Suwung Landfill is already under investigation for environmental pollution; the central government will no longer provide administrative sanctions, but may pursue criminal action if waste entering is not controlled. ‘Truly, organic waste must not enter any longer,’ the Environment Minister added. He noted that restricting organic waste to Suwung is the only solution at present, given that organic waste accounts for around 60% of Bali’s total waste. ‘No matter who it is, waste must be sorted from now on; without organic sorting, organic waste will not be allowed to enter Suwung by the end of March.’
