The Padang City Government has partnered with the National Food and Drug Authority (Balai Besar Pengawasan Obat dan Makanan, BBPOM) to conduct surveillance of fast-breaking food at “Pasa Pabukoan” located in the Imam Bonjol Green Space, Padang, on Thursday (26 February). The surveillance initiative is expected to guarantee food safety for residents during the Islamic month of Ramadan 1447 H.

“This represents a form of service and a demonstration of the government’s commitment to protecting the community. We want residents to feel secure whilst enjoying the fast-breaking meals offered by traders,” said Deputy Mayor Maigus Nasir.

Meanwhile, Head of BBPOM Padang, Martin Suhendri, explained that food safety trends in West Sumatra have shown positive results. In Padang City, 20-25 samples are currently undergoing field testing.

“Compared to last year, when four violations were discovered (including the use of textile dye Rhodamine B), this year’s trend is significantly better. This is thanks to the synergy between Padang City Government through the Health and Trade Offices,” Martin stated.

BBPOM brought a mobile laboratory to conduct real-time sample testing at “Pasa Pabukoan”. In addition to monitoring fast-breaking foods, BBPOM has already inspected 26 distribution facilities (retail and distributor outlets).

Ahead of Eid, BBPOM plans to conduct parcel raids. Martin emphasised that business operators must ensure that products in parcels have an expiry date of at least three weeks after Eid.

Additionally, the public is urged to remain vigilant and apply the principle of Check Packaging, Label, Distribution Licence, and Expiry Date (CHECK PLDE).

“Do not believe hoaxes, trust BBPOM data,” he concluded.
