Eni SpA to Invest Rp 150 Trillion in East Kalimantan Gas Sector
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia has revealed that Eni SpA will invest Rp 150 trillion in East Kalimantan Province. The Rome-headquartered energy company is focusing its investment on the natural gas sector, specifically the development of offshore gas fields in East Kalimantan, namely the Jangkrik Block and Merakes Block located in the Makassar Strait.
Bahlil made the announcement whilst attending the opening of the Golkar Party's East Kalimantan Regional Conference in Samarinda on Saturday, 19 July 2025. The investment represents a positive signal of foreign investor confidence in Indonesia's energy potential, particularly in the natural gas sector.
Eni SpA is recognised as one of the seven supermajors — a designation for the world's largest oil and gas companies — with operations spanning more than 64 countries and over 32,500 employees worldwide. Founded in 1953, the Italian government remains a significant shareholder both directly and through national financial institutions, making Eni a strategic component of the country's economy. In European financial markets, Eni is listed as a member of the Euro Stoxx 50 index, confirming its position as one of the most valuable companies on the continent.
Eni operates a comprehensive business model spanning exploration through to processing and distribution. Its activities encompass fossil energy development, gas and renewable energy power generation, bio-refinery operations, and the petrochemical sector. Combining advanced technology with a commitment to sustainability, Eni has established itself as a major player in the shifting global energy landscape.
The company is undergoing a major transformation by adopting a decarbonisation strategy, with an ambitious target of carbon neutrality by 2050. It is also increasingly aggressive in developing renewable energy, biofuels, and innovations in the circular economy and environmentally friendly fuel processing.
Indonesia is a key point in Eni's expansion across Southeast Asia. Since entering the country in 2001, the company has focused on upstream oil and gas activities, particularly in the Kutai Basin in East Kalimantan, a region known for its abundant natural gas potential. One of Eni's principal projects is the Merakes Field and the East Sepinggan block, which are currently operational and supplying gas for both domestic consumption and LNG exports.
Eni's infrastructure in East Kalimantan includes deepwater offshore installations, pipeline networks, and direct connections to the Bontang LNG refinery. The Merakes East field, which recently commenced production, has increased Eni's gas output volume to more than 700 million cubic feet per day. This figure is expected to rise further with new projects such as Maha, Northern Hub, and the Gendalo-Gendang development.
