English subtitles on films
English subtitles on films
From Kompas
Our organization BKS-AJBSI/Teflin (board for the cooperation among Schools of English language and literature in Indonesia) is involved in the teaching of English under the supervision of the Directorate General of Higher Education. On the subject of the current issue of the dubbing of films I would like to make the following suggestion.
I propose to the government, that TVRI and all private TV stations provide foreign films using native English filmstars with subtitles in English. It would be useful for students to acquire English language skills.
In the USA films with English subtitles are shown for deaf- mutes and prove also to be useful to foreign viewers who are not handicapped in the same way.
I have heard that it is not too difficult to ask for the original script of films from the film importers. It will be easy to transfer the sentences in the script onto the film.
It is not necessary to provide every film with English subtitles. Two films each week for each TV station will be adequate. The films should preferably contain positive aspects of education and culture.
