Global energy crisis returns to the spotlight amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Iran and its impact on major world energy distribution routes. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that the effects of these supply disruptions are now becoming significantly felt, especially in Europe’s aviation sector. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated that the European region could have only limited reserves of jet fuel, or avtur, if supply disruptions continue. Birol added that this situation could trigger major disruptions in aviation operations, including flight cancellations in the near term if oil supplies remain hindered by the conflict. This crisis was triggered by disruptions in energy distribution through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route that has long been one of the world’s main shipping lanes for oil and gas. The blockade in that area is seen as potentially sparking the largest energy crisis in modern history. “In the past, there was a group called ‘Dire Straits.’ Now the situation is indeed very dire, and this will have a major impact on the global economy. The longer it continues, the worse the impact on economic growth and inflation worldwide,” he said. In addition, Birol emphasised that the crisis’s effects will be felt broadly through rising energy prices across various sectors. “The impacts will include rising petrol prices, rising gas prices, and rising electricity prices,” he stated. As distribution routes are disrupted, European airlines are beginning to warn of potential fuel shortages in the coming weeks. This situation risks disrupting the summer holiday season, a period of high air travel demand.
