Employees told not to skip work next week
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja warned subordinates planning to skip work next Monday, Thursday and Friday that they will be punished severely.
The governor said Feb. 19, Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 are not holidays even though they fall between holidays. He therefore expects all city officials to show up at their offices on these days.
"I ask you to perform your daily duties as usual. Show your discipline as government employees," Surjadi said at the employee's monthly gathering yesterday.
Deputy governor for administrative affairs, Idroes, also warned that firm action will be taken against delinquent employees.
"The punishment will be given based on the existing regulation, including delays in promotions," Idroes said.
He said it is not right to misuse Idul Fitri holidays by think it is right to continue the holiday into the next week.
"We are in the middle of the national discipline movement and we intend to uphold the regulation, so there will be no excuse for such action," he said.
Governor Surjadi said that by actually working on these days, City Hall staff will set a good example for the Indonesian civil services.
The city administration has 75,000 employees, most work at City Hall on Jl. Medan Merdeka Selatan in Central Jakarta.
The governor also urged Jakartans spending Idul Fitri in their hometowns not to bring their relatives back when they return to the city.
Surjadi said newcomers not only have a negative impact on the city, but also themselves because it is tough to live in Jakarta.
"Please don't bring your relatives along when you return here because they will become problems for the city and to themselves when they fail to find a better life here," he said.
Jakarta is currently home to nine million people, a number that increases each year when Jakartans bring their relatives back with them after spending Idul fitri in their hometowns. (yns)
