Chairman of the Jogja City Branch of PDIP, Eko Suwanto, criticised the United States and Israel’s military strike on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader. He said the move violates the principles of world order and world peace. It is reported that the Supreme Leader died in air strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on Saturday, 28 February, in Tehran. The attack sparked an escalation of conflict in the Middle East. Eko said that strikes against a sovereign state cannot be justified because they risk civilian casualties, including children. ‘What is happening in the Middle East, the death of Iran’s leader in an attack by Israel and the United States also triggers civilian casualties. The actions of the United States and Israel clearly violate the principles of world peace,’ Eko said in a statement on Thursday, 5 March 2026. According to him, Indonesia should remain consistent in pursuing an independent and active foreign policy as mandated by the constitution. He believes Indonesia’s foreign policy today could potentially drag Indonesia into blocs aligned with the United States and Israel. ‘The United States and Israel have overstepped their authority. Indonesia should be consistent with an independent and active foreign policy, in accordance with our constitution, it should resist colonisation, actively realise, maintain world order, everlasting peace and social justice, as stated in the preamble of the 1945 Constitution. Clearly attacking the United States and Israel against Iran violates the basic principles in the 1945 Constitution,’ he explained. Eko also praised the stance of the fifth President of Indonesia Megawati Sukarnoputri, who sent a condolence letter to the Iranian government over the death of Khamenei and the civilian casualties in the conflict. ‘Then within the frame of humanity, the Jogja City PDIP commends and supports the statement of Madam Megawati Sukarnoputri, the fifth President of Indonesia, in the condolence letter sent to the Iranian government, with heartfelt condolences for the civilian casualties, children and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. I think it is part of Indonesia’s duty to maintain good Indonesia-Iran relations,’ he said. He described the legacy as a determination to build a peaceful world, free from imperialism and hegemony, and to stand with oppressed peoples. ‘That continues the best legacy of the early leaders, both Bung Karno in Indonesia and the revolutionary leaders in Iran. Namely, the resolve to build a peaceful world, free from imperialism and hegemony, and to stand with those who are oppressed. The important message from Madam Megawati, that the friendship between the Indonesian and Iranian peoples remains safeguarded and even strengthened in the future,’ he concluded.
