Eko Suwanto Campaigns for 'Gemar Makan Ikan' Initiative to Reduce Stunting Rates in Jogja
To support the stunting prevention programme, Eko Suwanto, Chairman of Commission A of the DIY DPRD, has collaborated with the DIY Marine and Fisheries Office to launch the Gemar Makan Ikan initiative. This step represents tangible support for ongoing efforts to reduce stunting rates in Yogyakarta City.
The DIY Regional Government and Yogyakarta City Government, backed by the Health Office, community health centres, ward heads, Family Welfare Empowerment groups, and family support teams, continue to implement measures to curb stunting. Nutritional aid in the form of eggs, milk, and fruit is regularly distributed through integrated health posts.
Eko stated that the Gemar Makan Ikan programme is designed to complement existing initiatives and serves as a concrete step to improve public nutrition.
“This programme officially started in RW 6 of Muja Muju Ward. Insya Allah, I will visit and foster relations in 86 RWs, providing real support for policies addressing stunting in Yogyakarta City,” Eko said in a written statement received by detikJogja on Monday (6/4/2026).
At the programme’s launch event, attended by local residents and health cadres, activities included distributing processed fish products, nutritional education, and providing recipe books for fish dishes to promote animal protein consumption in the community.
In addition to education, residents received guidance on preparing fish to retain its nutritional value and make it appealing to children. Eko explained that the programme aims to raise community awareness about the importance of fish consumption, particularly for toddlers and pregnant women.
“Fish is rich in protein, omega-3, and vitamins that are crucial for toddler and child growth, as well as maternal health,” Eko said.
“We encourage the public to enjoy consuming fish more. This is vital for preventing stunting and creating a healthy, intelligent generation,” he added.
Meanwhile, Iswadi, the Head of Muja Muju Ward, welcomed the programme positively. He believes it assists mothers in preparing healthy meals for their families.
“This programme is very helpful, especially for us mothers to be more creative in providing nutritious food for our children,” he stated.
