Eid Travel and Bonuses to Drive Lebaran 2026 Money Circulation Up to Rp 161 Trillion
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The circulation of money during the Eid al-Fitr holiday is projected to increase despite an estimated decline in the number of mudik travellers.
Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) for Regional Autonomy, Sarman Simanjorang, stated that the number of mudik travellers is estimated at 143.9 million, equivalent to 35.975 million households, assuming an average family size of four people.
He illustrated that if each family brings Rp 4.12 million, assuming a 10 per cent increase from 2025’s Rp 3.75 million, the potential money circulation can be calculated as Rp 4.12 million multiplied by the number of mudik households of 35.975 million, resulting in Rp 148.39 trillion.
For context, a survey by the Ministry of Transportation indicates that the potential movement of people during the mudik for Eid al-Fitr 1447 H or Lebaran 2026 is estimated to reach 143.9 million people, or 50.6 per cent of Indonesia’s total population.
Sarman revealed that this money circulation figure still has potential to rise; the calculation is at a moderate or lowest level.
The total money circulation still has the potential to reach Rp 161.88 trillion, assuming an average of Rp 4.5 million per family.
Sarman explained that the money circulation will largely be used for mudik needs such as tickets, toll fees and fuel, vehicle servicing, and souvenirs for family in the hometown.
In addition, the money circulation is also projected to be used for buying new clothes and prayer equipment, Eid bonuses for relatives and family, hampers for neighbours and friends.
Not only that, Lebaran money circulation can also be used for various typical Eid foods and drinks to welcome guests, as well as general household needs such as staple foods like meat, chicken, fruit, as well as zakat fitrah and charity.
Moreover, while in the hometown, the money will also circulate in tourist destinations.
Various UMKM traders will enjoy increased turnover, such as food or drink sellers, souvenirs, sellers of local specialties, and sellers of batik or local fabrics, as well as culinary centres in various regions.
“To ensure the public can smoothly obtain cash, Bank Indonesia has provided Rp 185.6 trillion in cash,” he said.
