Eid Holiday: OJK Predicts Surge in Demand for Travel and Accident Insurance
JAKARTA – The Financial Services Authority (OJK) projects that public demand for travel and accident insurance will increase ahead of Eid 2025.
Ogi Prastomiyono, Head of the OJK’s Insurance, Guarantee and Pension Fund Supervision Division, stated that the surge in population mobility during this period presents an opportunity for the insurance industry to boost the uptake of travel protection products.
According to data from the Ministry of Transport, approximately 143.9 million people are expected to travel during this year’s Eid holiday. Although this figure represents a 6.9 per cent decline compared to last year’s Eid, it still marks a significant increase from routine daily mobility.
Beyond driving product sales, the industry can leverage the Eid travel period to expand insurance service accessibility to the public. Ogi noted that this can be achieved through offering relevant protection products tailored to travellers and ensuring convenient access to services during their journeys.
The Eid travel period also presents an opportunity for the insurance industry to grow its assets by 5-7 per cent in 2026, in line with OJK’s targets. To achieve this objective, the industry must continue to strengthen its capitalisation, governance and risk management, enhance product quality and distribution, and maintain prudent investment management.
“Challenges that need to be anticipated include financial market dynamics, claim rates across certain business segments, and the need for improved industry efficiency,” Ogi added.
In January 2026, the OJK recorded that the insurance industry’s total assets reached Rp1.214 trillion, an increase of 5.96 per cent year-on-year from Rp1.146 trillion in the same period of the previous year.
Commercial insurance assets totalled Rp995.19 trillion, representing growth of 7.48 per cent year-on-year. Commercial insurance premium income for January 2026 reached Rp36.38 trillion, growing 4.67 per cent year-on-year. This comprised life insurance premiums, which contracted by 6.15 per cent year-on-year to Rp17.97 trillion, and general and reinsurance premiums, which grew by 17.92 per cent year-on-year to Rp18.42 trillion.
Non-commercial insurance, comprising BPJS Health, BPJS Employment, and insurance programmes for civil servants, military personnel and police officers related to workplace accident and death benefit schemes, recorded total assets of Rp219.63 trillion, contracting 0.42 per cent year-on-year.
