Eid al-Fitr Brings Influx of Tourists to Bali’s Top Destinations

Bali is about to feel busy! While the island has fallen silent to observe Nyepi, when the province powers back up again, it is full steam ahead for Eid al-Fitr.

This is the biggest festival of the Islamic calendar, and millions of Indonesian families are traveling across the country to celebrate the festival.

Bali is one of the most popular destinations for domestic tourists in Indonesia, and this Eid al-Fitr, the province is set to welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists to top destinations around the island.

Many tens of thousands of people are traveling to Bali overland from East Java and from Lombok and East Nusa Tenggara, and bringing with them their own vehicles.

This always adds to the existing traffic congestion issues in Bali, so local people and tourists across the island need to leave plenty of time to travel by road over the coming days and be prepared to encounter traffic jams.

Tourists traveling to Bali Airport are also advised to leave extra time to travel by road. In fact, it is advisable to leave above and beyond the usual amount of time to travel to Bali Airport.

Even if this means feeling like you’ve arrived super early, Bali Airport is laying on a range of themed events to celebrate both Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi this week. Passengers can expect Ogoh Ogoh parades, kecak and Barong performances, and Eid parades too.

To help mitigate any passenger or tourist congestion across Bali’s busiest travel hubs and tourist attractions, thousands more officers and staff have been put on duty. A total of 2,598 officers are on standby for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr Transportation Post at Bali Airport alone.

Speaking to reporters earlier this week, Ngurah Rai Airport General Manager Nugroho Jati confirmed that the Eid al-Fitr Transportation Post will be in place until the outbound passenger flow from the festival is over.

Jati noted, “This Integrated Eid al-Fitr Holiday Transportation Monitoring Post will serve as a cross-stakeholder coordination center for overseeing airport operations for the next 18 days.” Separately, Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, the Head of Communication & Legal Division at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, explained that there has been such demand for domestic travel to Bali that more than 15 new flight routes have been laid on during this period.

He explained, “During the [first] three days of service at the 2026 Eid Transportation Post, we served 188,655 passengers. This number represents an increase of approximately 12.9 percent compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 167,078 passengers.”

Tourists in Bali who want to avoid the busy crowds this weekend should look to lesser-visited destinations such as Amed, Lovina, and West Bali National Park. Top destinations like Kuta, Legian, and Seminyak, and their respective beaches, are expected to feel busier than usual this weekend.

Top cultural attractions like Penglipuran Village, GWK Cultural Park, Ubud Water Palace, and Tanah Lot Temple are all anticipating an increase in the number of tourist arrivals. Shopping Malls, such as Kuta Beachwalk Mall and ICON Mall in Sanur will also be busier than usual and hosting special events for Eid.

Here at The Bali Sun, we love visiting the top attractions over holidays like this. Although it feels a little busier, everyone is in good spirits, and there is a real social and upbeat atmosphere.

Tourists should also be aware that fast boat and ferry crossings will be extra busy this weekend. It is advisable to book fast boat tickets as far in advance as possible between now and the end of the month, especially from Sanur to the Gili Islands and Lombok. Sanur Harbor will feel particularly busy, and so it is a good idea to consider traveling to the outlying islands from Serangan Port, Padangbai, or even explore the new connection options that have opened up from Kusamba Port.

Less visited areas such as Amed, Medewi, Lovina, and West Bali National Park are our top picks for crowd-free getaways this Eid al-Fitr in Bali. Munduk is another great option for anyone who is seeking more of a jungle feel, rather than a coastal escape.
