Eid al-Fitr and Nyepi Close Together, Minister of Religious Affairs Reveals Takbir Rules in Bali
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar briefed President Prabowo on preparations ahead of Eid al-Fitr at the Merdeka Palace, Wednesday (4 March 2026). One of the issues discussed was the regulation of the takbir prayers conducted close to Nyepi Day on Bali.
Nasaruddin Umar explained that the government has anticipated potential dynamics arising from the proximity of Nyepi and the night of takbir. He said that coordination has been undertaken with local governments and community leaders in Bali to preserve harmony among adherents of different religions.
“I also reported that preparations for Eid are approaching because, in some places, the 19th is Nyepi Day. Nyepi Day, as we know, requires no loud noises, no vehicles and so on; yet on that night our friends will be performing takbir,” Nasaruddin said during a press briefing.
The Minister said that the outcome of the coordination shows a mutual agreement that the two religious celebrations can proceed with mutual respect. The government together with Bali’s community leaders have agreed on a takbir mechanism that is adjusted to Nyepi regulations.
“Alhamdulillah, we reported to the President that there is already an agreement with local government and Bali’s community leaders that takbir does not conflict with Nyepi. The condition is that Nyepi must proceed, but takbir may also proceed, only without a sound system and with a time limit from 6pm to 9pm,” he explained.
In addition, Nasaruddin Umar touched on the possibility of differences in declaring Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia. He stressed that such differences are normal in the country’s religious life and will be determined through the isbat session.
“And Eid al-Fitr, too, we accept such differences as normal in Indonesia. Later we will see the isbat session to determine exactly when Eid al-Fitr will come,” said Nasaruddin.
He stressed that the government will continue to strive to maintain an atmosphere of tolerance and harmony among adherents of different religions, especially during moments of major religious festivities that are close in time.
