Education Minister Reveals Widespread Misuse of BOS Funds and KIP
JAKARTA - The Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen), Abdul Mu’ti, has admitted to receiving information that there is still widespread misuse of School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds and the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP). According to Mu’ti, these findings indicate that good governance and clean government have not yet been fully implemented in the education environment. “We are still receiving a lot of information, for example, how BOS funds have not been used as they should be, KIP is being misused, and various policies where the immediate environment in schools is actually where it happens,” said Mu’ti at the Launch of the Anti-Corruption Education Guide and Teaching Materials at the Ministry of Home Affairs Office, Jakarta, on Monday (11/5/2026). He gave the example that schoolchildren are taught to act honestly, but their closest environment does not set an example for honesty. Mu’ti stated that the Ministry of Education is also striving to teach how all policies are formed based on honesty. “We have just implemented an academic ability test, which is not merely measuring academic ability, but we are also trying to instil honesty with the tagline ‘Honest is Joyful’,” he said. “Of course, we cannot work alone without cooperation and support from all parties,” Mu’ti added. He hopes that the launch of the guidebook on Anti-Corruption Education can encourage schools to become models of honest, clean culture free from corruption. “Not just as a slogan and knowledge, but as part of the main culture and civilisation that starts from an early age, starting from the school environment, the closest environment to our children at school, the family environment, society, and in the governance of state administration,” said Mu’ti.
