East OKU Livestock Service Prevents Animal Diseases During Transitional Season
Martapura (ANTARA) - The Fisheries and Livestock Service (Diskannak) of East Ogan Komering Ulu District (OKU), South Sumatra, is preventing the spread of diseases in livestock that are prone to occurring during the transitional season.
Head of the Livestock and Animal Health Division of Diskannak East OKU, Untung Sutoyo, in Martapura on Monday, stated that livestock are vulnerable to diseases during the shift from the rainy to the dry season.
Untung Sutoyo explained that, in general, during the rainy season, livestock are susceptible to various diseases such as diarrhoea, bloat, and scabies or a type of skin disease.
Meanwhile, during the dry season, common spreading animal diseases include Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), Jembrana, Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), parasitic infections (worms), and respiratory tract infections.
As a preventive measure, they are distributing medicines and vitamins free of charge to livestock to prevent them from easily contracting these diseases.
“The provision of these medicines aims to maintain livestock health and prevent the spread of disease outbreaks,” he said.
They are also administering vaccine injections to livestock such as cattle and sheep to boost their immunity.
“During the period of January to March 2026, a total of 5,000 livestock owned by the community have been vaccinated against FMD free of charge to prevent the spread of the disease,” he emphasised.
He also urged the public to always pay attention to animal health, maintain cleanliness of pens and the surrounding environment, and ensure healthy feed as a preventive measure against transitional season diseases.
He stated that poor feed provision and unclean pen maintenance are feared to trigger the emergence of various diseases affecting pets.
