East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) will be designated as the national salt self-sufficiency centre in 2027. This was stated by the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) of the Republic of Indonesia, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, after leading a meeting with regional heads and the Regional Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimda) in NTT, Wednesday (25/2/2026).

“We must be able to achieve self-sufficiency, and that is my promise to Mr. President that by the end of 2027, there will be no more salt imports. We hope that in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), it will be the national salt production centre,” said Trenggono.

According to Trenggono, NTT is not only limited to Rote Ndao Regency, which has salt production. However, there are still many areas in NTT that have salt potential.

“The development of salt in Rote, earlier the Regent Yosef said that in his area there are 4,000 hectares that have great potential for the development of salt ponds,” he explained.

During his visit to NTT, Trenggono brought the Director of Garam Indonesia, Abraham Mose, to ensure that Indonesia does not lack salt after Rote Ndao was designated as the National Salt Centre.

“I brought the Director of PT Garam here, so that Indonesia, as a maritime country, will no longer experience a salt crisis. So not only in Rote, but throughout the East Nusa Tenggara region, because the salt potential is very large,” he said.

KKP to Build Modern Shrimp Industry in Waingapu

Sakti also explained that NTT has a lot of potential, such as seaweed and shrimp. For this reason, KKP will build industries in NTT.

“We will build industries, the potential here is the aquaculture industry,” said Sakti.

According to him, the construction of the shrimp industry is currently being built in Waingapu, East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“Shrimp farming, this is very good for our exports, so in NTT, which does not yet have modern shrimp ponds, we will build it in Waingapu and it is currently in the process,” he said.

In addition to shrimp potential, Sakti also said that NTT has other potential such as seaweed which can be managed by the community to support the economy.

“The potential for seaweed. This potential is also very extraordinary, so this will later increase the economy in NTT to a surplus,” he said.
