Indonesia’s palm oil industry plays a vital role in the economy. To support the growth of the national palm oil sector, East Kalimantan is improving the quality of palm seeds through certification of superior variety seeds, with current local palm seed production reaching 30,000 seedlings.

Indonesia is the world’s number one palm oil producer according to the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in 2024. Its production contributes nearly 59% of the total from all countries, followed by Malaysia at 24%, and other countries including Ghana at 17%.

To accompany the development of the palm oil industry, East Kalimantan Province is striving to enhance the quality and production of local palm seeds by certifying superior variety palm seeds, ensuring seed quality, and preventing the circulation of fake or illegal palm seeds.

In 2026, East Kalimantan’s local palm seed production reaches 30,000 seedlings with various varieties.

The Acting Head of the East Kalimantan Plantation Office, Ahmad Muzakkir, in Samarinda on Monday, 30 March, stated that seedling production is carried out by the Plantation Office’s implementing unit and 18 private seed producers.

Ahmad Muzakkir, Acting Head of the East Kalimantan Plantation Office: “Currently, the need for palm seeds is indeed very high, but it also requires supervision because we do not want any illegal seedlings. However, based on requests from companies and the public asking for certification, there are already many who have made requests, even up to Kaltara actually.”

The amount of local palm seed production in East Kalimantan is said to still need to meet the requirement of around 2.5 million seedlings for domestic plantations, most of which are still supplied from outside the region.

For this reason, the East Kalimantan Provincial Government continues to open opportunities for seedling business permits to add producers and local seed providers.
