East Kalimantan Governor Rudy Mas’ud has decided to cancel the procurement of an Rp 8.49 billion official vehicle that sparked significant public controversy. Ahmad Irawan, a member of Commission II of the House of Representatives, described the Governor’s decision as appropriate.

“In my view, the decision to cancel the vehicle procurement is something that should be commended. Although the procurement was not entirely a mistake on the part of the Governor, as it complied with existing regulations, I believe the response given was very appropriate,” Irawan told journalists on Wednesday, 3 March 2026.

“Because the Governor listened to public criticism and feedback regarding the appropriateness of the vehicle facility,” he added.

Irawan expressed hope that this controversy could serve as a lesson for other regional leaders. He urged every regional head to prioritise aspects that directly benefit the public.

“This can serve as an example for other regions in assessing the appropriateness of facilities used by regional heads or local government administrations,” he said.

“Although the regional budgets may still be robust, it would be prudent to direct spending towards strengthening the public economy, equitable development and public services,” he continued.

Furthermore, Irawan called on the Ministry of Home Affairs to revise regulations concerning the standardisation of facilities for regional heads. This is intended to adjust the standards of propriety that the public is willing to tolerate.

“So that similar incidents do not occur in the future, the government, specifically the Ministry of Home Affairs, should revise regulations related to the standardisation of work facilities and infrastructure for regional government. Going forward, the standards should prioritise function, propriety and the financial capacity of the region,” he concluded.
