Surabaya — East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa has stated the provincial government’s readiness to oversee the implementation of a policy restricting social media account ownership for children under 16 years of age down to the district level, involving schools and local families.

“This measure is highly important as a protective effort against children from various threats in digital spaces, such as pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, and potential digital addiction,” said Governor Khofifah in Surabaya on Tuesday.

She explained that the policy is outlined in the Ministry of Communication and Digital Regulation (Permenkomdigi) No. 9 of 2026, which derives from Government Regulation (PP) No. 17 of 2025 concerning the Management of Electronic System Operations in Child Protection, known as PP Tunas.

According to Khofifah, the policy issued by the Ministry of Communication and Digital represents a strategic measure to safeguard children’s safety and future amid the rapid development of digital technology.

“We want to ensure that digital spaces remain safe spaces for children. Protection of young people must become a shared priority,” she said.

Khofifah added that the successful implementation of this policy requires synergy between government, digital platforms, educational institutions, and parents in providing digital literacy education to children.

The East Java Provincial Government, she continued, is ready to support the central government’s policy through strengthening digital literacy programmes, education on healthy internet usage, and child protection in digital spaces.

“Technology must serve humanity, not sacrifice our children’s childhood. Therefore, we must support this measure together for the future of Indonesia’s generation,” she said.
