The East Jakarta Metropolitan Police has apprehended JMH, the perpetrator who assaulted a petrol station attendant in the Cipinang area of East Jakarta. Police have confirmed that the perpetrator is not a member of the police force.

“The perpetrator, identified as JMH, has been detained and confirmed to be a civilian with a private sector profession,” said the Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, in a statement on Tuesday (24 February 2026).

Budi refuted information circulating that the perpetrator was a law enforcement officer. Budi explained that JMH was arrested by a joint team from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police and the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Pulogadung Police Station in the Rawalumbu area, Bekasi City, West Java.

“The perpetrator was apprehended in the Rawalumbu area, East Bekasi. The perpetrator was then taken to the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police for further investigation,” Budi said.

As is known, an employee at a petrol station in the Cipinang area of East Jakarta was assaulted by a civilian who wanted to refuel. The assault was captured on CCTV and went viral on social media.

Based on a video seen by detikcom on Tuesday (24 February), the assault reportedly occurred on Sunday evening (22 February). Initially, the man, suspected to be the car owner, wanted to refuel.

The man got out of the car and approached one of the petrol station attendants. The two were then seen talking.

While they were talking, the man, suspected to be the car owner, pointed at the attendant’s face. The man then punched the petrol station attendant in the face.

After the assault, the man briefly returned to the car. The man then got out of the car again and was seen holding a bag.

The man approached the petrol station attendant again. The man then continued to point at and chase the attendant.

Shortly after, the man left the petrol station area, leaving his car behind. When he returned, the man pointed at another man.

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the East Jakarta Metropolitan Police, AKBP Dicky Fertoffan, confirmed the incident. Dicky explained that the assault began when the petrol station attendant refused to refuel the man’s car because the vehicle’s license plate did not match its intended use.

“Yes, this is under investigation. The person wanted to refuel with Pertalite, but the petrol station refused. The license plate was not correct, it was not for the intended use,” said Dicky.
