East Jakarta Petrol Station Worker Assaulted by Man Claiming to Be Security Official: 'I Was Punched Repeatedly'
A petrol station operator in the Cipinang area of Pulogadung, East Jakarta, has reported being assaulted and threatened with death, allegedly by a person claiming to be a security official, during his night shift on Sunday (22 February) at approximately 22:00 local time.
The victim, Lukman Hakim (19), recounted being chased to the staff quarters after being punched repeatedly.
“I was punched back and forth. I ran to the back, towards the temporary staff quarters. He chased me while saying, ‘Run, where are you going, you want to die now?’” Lukman said in East Jakarta on Monday (23 February).
Lukman, who had been working for just six months as an operator at petrol station 3413901 after graduating from vocational school, explained that the incident began when a car arrived to fill up with subsidised fuel. He waited for the barcode required under Pertamina’s procedures, but the code was not forthcoming.
“I was on night duty and things were quiet. The suspect’s car came in to fill up with fuel. I waited for the barcode, but after several minutes it still hadn’t been shown,” Lukman said.
As the queue of vehicles began to grow, Lukman requested the subsidy barcode. However, when it was finally shown, the data in the code did not match the vehicle type.
“The car looked like an Alphard, but the barcode listed it as a Kijang. Under Pertamina’s standard operating procedures, even if the number plate matches, if the barcode differs we are not permitted to dispense fuel,” Lukman explained.
Allegedly angered by the refusal, the man became aggressive and challenged the staff.
“He was confrontational, saying ‘Who dares challenge me?’” Lukman recounted.
The situation escalated when Lukman called a colleague named Ahmad Khoirul Anam to verify the fuelling policy. The suspect pushed Ahmad Khoirul Anam, causing his head to strike a car. A woman inside the vehicle was heard attempting to stop the violent behaviour.
The suspect also slapped another staff member, Abud Mahmudin, who had been trying to calm the situation. Lukman initially thought the suspect would leave after his car moved forward, but the man returned and got out of the vehicle while Lukman was counting the shift’s takings.
“He punched me repeatedly. That’s when I ran to the back. I ran to the quarters and he chased me. Residents told me to go straight to the police station, so I ran to the police station,” Lukman explained.
He then fled to the Pulogadung Police Station. When officers returned to the scene with him, the suspect had already left. The disturbance reportedly lasted nearly an hour, from approximately 22:00 to just before 23:30 local time.
CCTV footage from the petrol station has been reviewed together with police officers, including those from the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, and has been secured as evidence.
“The CCTV has been reviewed by both the local police station and the Metropolitan Police. All the evidence is there. After that, we were advised to file a formal report,” Lukman said.
The owner of petrol station 3413901, Ernesta, confirmed that the case had been reported to the Pulogadung Police Station. The injured victims have also undergone medical examinations for forensic documentation.
“We have reported it to the Pulogadung Police Station opposite the petrol station. And my employees who were injured have already undergone forensic examinations,” Ernesta said.
In addition to regular police, the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police has also visited the location in connection with the suspected involvement of a security official.
There were three victims in the incident: Ahmad Khoirul Anam, who has worked at the station for approximately five years; Lukman Hakim, who had been working for six months; and Abud Mahmudin, with around four years of service.
Anam sustained a slap to the cheek, Lukman was punched on the right jaw, whilst Abud was struck below the eye and on the cheek, resulting in a knocked-out tooth.
The victims have expressed hope that the case will be processed transparently and professionally, to ensure a sense of safety for petrol station workers carrying out their duties in accordance with procedures.
