Jakarta (ANTARA) - The East Jakarta city government, through the Environmental Office (Sudin LH), has officially closed the Temporary Waste Storage Site (TPS) Rawadas in Pondok Kopi, Duren Sawit, following a significant increase in waste volume.

“The agreement (to close TPS Rawadas) was taken in response to field conditions showing a significant increase in waste volume,” said the Head of Sudin LH East Jakarta, Julius Monangta, in Jakarta on Friday.

This policy is part of strategic steps to reorganise the waste management system comprehensively to make it more orderly, measurable, and in line with its intended purpose.

Julius stated that the closure of TPS Rawadas is the result of a joint agreement reached through a multi-party coordination meeting.

The meeting involved various parties, from Pondok Kopi Ward, Sudin LH officials, the Ward Consultative Agency (LMK), RW administrators, to local community figures.

This volume increase, according to Julius, is also caused by indications that waste from outside the Pondok Kopi area is being dumped at TPS Rawadas.

This situation is seen as increasingly burdening the TPS capacity and potentially causing environmental problems.

“This reorganisation aims to restore the TPS function, reduce the potential for accumulation, and improve environmental quality in the Pondok Kopi area and surroundings,” said Munjirin.

As a follow-up to the closure, the East Jakarta city government is preparing waste disposal locations to other designated TPS as a technical step to ensure optimal cleanliness services to the community.

In addition, strengthening the waste transport fleet is being carried out through optimisation of the transport system from affected areas.

Deployment of personnel in the field is also being done to regulate operations and ensure a smooth transition of waste disposal without disrupting residents’ activities.

On the other hand, Julius emphasised the importance of strengthening waste management from the source.

This effort is carried out through education for the community on waste sorting at the household level, as well as optimisation of Waste Processing Sites with the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS 3R) concept.

According to him, the success of reorganising the waste management system does not only depend on government policies but also on active community participation in reducing and managing waste from the source.

“With active roles from the community and regional administrators, it is hoped that the cleanliness system in East Jakarta will become more integrated and environmentally friendly,” said Julius.
