Earth Day 2026: Telkom Reinforces Steps Towards a Sustainable Future
In commemoration of Earth Day 2026, themed ‘Our Power, Our Planet,’ PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (Telkom) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability. This is demonstrated through environmental conservation efforts, including the planting of 10,000 mangroves and the transplantation of 2,000 coral reefs at Pandanan Beach, Malaka Village, Pemenang Subdistrict, North Lombok Regency, NTB, on Thursday (23/4/2026). The activity was carried out in collaboration with strategic partners, involving local communities as part of efforts to preserve coastal ecosystems and strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration for a more sustainable future for the planet. This action represents the implementation of Telkom’s GoZero% - Sustainability Action by Telkom Indonesia initiative, particularly under the ‘Save Our Planet’ pillar, which focuses on reducing environmental impacts, protecting ecosystems, and accelerating the transition to low-carbon operations. Telkom’s SGM for Social Responsibility, Hery Susanto, stated that Earth Day is an important moment to strengthen awareness that digital growth must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Telkom views sustainability not merely as a supporting programme, but as an integral part of its long-term business strategy. ‘Through mangrove and coral reef conservation, we aim to deliver tangible benefits to coastal ecosystems and surrounding communities, while ensuring that digital infrastructure development remains in harmony with natural preservation,’ he said. The selection of the conservation site is also based on its strategic position along the TelkomGroup’s Mandalika-Sanur Submarine Cable Communication System (SKKL) route. This provides added value by considering the synergy between protecting coastal ecosystems and maintaining the sustainability of TelkomGroup’s digital connectivity infrastructure. The presence of healthy coastal ecosystems around the submarine cable route also supports the resilience of the coastal area against abrasion and environmental changes, which is crucial for the infrastructure’s continuity. Mangroves play a vital role as natural protectors of coastal areas from abrasion, absorbers of blue carbon, and habitats for various marine biota. Meanwhile, coral reefs help maintain marine biodiversity and support the socio-economic sustainability of coastal communities through fisheries and tourism sectors. Therefore, the implementation of conservation in the North Lombok area is expected to provide sustainable ecological and socio-economic impacts. Throughout 2025, Telkom has also carried out various conservation and environmental management initiatives as part of the company’s commitment. These include collecting over 3.3 tonnes of plastic waste, equivalent to 177,915 bottles, through the use of Reverse Vending Machines (RVM) at Telkom Hub Jakarta; circular management of optical fibre cable waste with a recovery rate of 73 per cent; and standardisation of eco-friendly buildings through international EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification to ensure measurable energy and resource efficiency. As a step in adapting to climate change, Telkom has implemented a Climate Transition Plan that serves as a guide for transformation towards low-carbon operations and the Net Zero Emission target by 2060. Telkom has established six decarbonisation levers as a guide for the company’s strategy in the initial phase (2023-2030) with targets: Emission Reduction: Reducing GHG emissions by 20 per cent (Scopes 1 & 2); Energy Efficiency: Reducing energy consumption by up to 10 per cent through network technology modernisation; Renewable Energy: Building solar PV panels with a capacity of more than 14 MWp; Waste Management: Reducing waste by at least 70 per cent and maximising optical fibre waste management. Telkom’s VP of Sustainability, Gunawan Wasisto Ciptaning Andri, added that the success of green transformation is not only determined by large investments, but also by the consistency of steps taken collectively. ‘We believe that big changes start from simple actions carried out collectively and sustainably. Therefore, Telkom will continue to promote an environmentally friendly culture across all business lines, from the daily behaviour of TelkomGroup personnel to the management of digital infrastructure,’ said Gunawan. Through the integrated GoZero% sustainability initiative, Telkom is committed to delivering business growth that aligns with environmental preservation and provides long-term positive impacts for society and future generations. Through the spirit of Earth Day 2026, Telkom continues to strengthen collaboration with various stakeholders to bring sustainability innovations that add value to the environment, society, and business. This commitment aligns with the company’s efforts to provide digital connectivity that is not only reliable and inclusive, but also responsible towards the planet and a sustainable future.
