Indonesian citizens (WNI) holding electronic passports or e-passports can now travel to Japan without obtaining a visa, effectively visa-free.

According to the official website of the Embassy of Japan in Indonesia, before departing for Japan, e-passport holders can complete pre-departure registration online in advance.

They can then issue an electronic Visa Exemption Registration Notice obtainable through the Japan Visa Exemption System (JAVES).

It is worth noting that for those already using this system, there is no longer any need to visit a Japanese Representative Office or the Visa Center (JVAC), and it offers greater convenience in the registration application process.

Once the registration procedure is complete, applicants will receive an email notification of successful registration and can display the “Visa Exemption Registration Notice” on their electronic devices such as smartphones or tablets.

Given the frequent errors in filling out names or uploading documents during registration, it is advisable to pay attention to the following points:

Travellers who have completed e-Passport Pre-Departure Registration through JAVES must show the “Visa Exemption Registration Notice” on their device (smartphone, tablet, etc.).

It is important to note that printed copies or screenshots of the “Visa Exemption Registration Notice” will not be accepted as substitutes.

Applicants who prefer not to use this system can still apply for Pre-Departure Visa Exemption Registration at Japanese Representative Offices in Indonesia (specifically in Jakarta at JVAC), using paper media and obtaining a sticker proof of Visa Exemption Registration in their e-passport.
