Dry day for Indonesia

Novan Iman Santosa, The Jakarta Post, Busan, South Korea

Weightlifter Jadi Setiadi failed to follow his compatriot's feat
in the Busan 2002 Asian Games when he only managed to finish
fourth in the men's 56-kilogram weightclass division at the
Pukyong University gymnasium with a total lift of 270.0
kilograms. His snatch lift was 120.0 kilograms and his clean-and-
jerk lift was 150.0 kilograms.

China's Wu Meijin won the gold medal with a total lift of
292.5 kilograms followed by two lifters from Chinese Taipei, Wang
Shin-yuan who lifted 282.5 kilograms and his compatriot Yang
Chin-yi with 275.0 kilograms.

Indonesia's Lisa Raema Rumbewas took Indonesia's first medal
after winning a bronze in the women's under-48-kilogram
weightclass division on Monday.

"I am not satisfied with the result because actually I could
do more," Jadi said after the event.

However, a weightlifting official, Gandrung, said the result
was a good one.

"Jadi has done his best. Especially when we consider that the
lift equaled the one he made in the Kuala Lumpur 2001 Southeast
Asian (SEA) Games," he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian beach volleyball players secured their
spots in the knock-out second round after winning all of their
group matches.

Agus Salim and Koko Prasetyo Darkuncoro of the Indonesia 1
team defeated the Thailand 2 team of Bunrueang Sonthi and Patsorn
Petch in Group A 21-13, 21-18.

Earlier in the morning, the Indonesia 2 team of Andy
Ardiansyah and Supriadi beat the Kuwait 1 team of Al Abdulqadeer
Dawood and Almuzail Adel 21-12, 21-17 in Group C.

In their second match of the day, the Indonesia 2 team
conquered their physical disadvantages by defeating the
Kazakhstan 1 team of Pavel Zabuslayev and Dmitriy Vorobyev 21-18,
21-18 in a tight match.

Both Indonesian teams topped their respective groups and
hopefully they will be able to defend this position after
Wednesday's matches, the last in the group qualifiers.

On Wednesday, Agus and Koko will face Qatar 1 in the second
round while the Indonesia 2 team will face South Korea 2.

Meanwhile, in women's beach volleyball, Indonesia's sole team
of Siti Nurjanah and Ni Putu Timy Yudhani Rahayu beat the host
South Korea 1 team of Chang Yoon Hee and Kim Yeon 21-16, 21-13.

The girls will challenge the China 1 team on Wednesday.

In a separate development, Indonesian rowers also secured
their places in the final stages after repechage races on the
Nakdong river.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's only gymnast, Jonathan Mangiring
Sianturi, finished 51st out of 61 gymnasts at the Sajik Gymnasium
after the preliminary rounds of men's team and individual events.

Jonathan, who only took part in two of five instruments,
collected 9.250 for the rings event and 9.100 for the vault
event.

"I don't know whether I will be in the final stage or not
because the gymnastics organizing committee has yet to decide.

"We expect they will issue the result on Wednesday or
Thursday," he said, adding that it would be better for him to
know the result as soon as possible.
