Drug traders, officer netted in police raid

JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta Police intensified their
weekend raids against suspected criminals, particularly at
entertainment spots.

In a raid early on Sunday morning, police dispatched to Ancol
Dreamland netted 15 people, including a plainclothes military
police officer who was driving a motorcycle for which he did not
have proper documents.

The police said they would handle the case of the officer in
line with existing laws, saying the officer would be treated the
same as the 14 civilians who were apprehended for similar
misdeeds.

"Since the officer was arrested in 'civilian' clothes, he will
be treated as all the others," police Capt. Rusyidi said.

The raid took place between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., with officers
questioning motorists leaving Ancol Dreamland.

Antara reported that a number of people netted in the
operation agreed to "out-of-court" settlements with the officers.

Early on Thursday, the North Jakarta Police detained two men
believed to be a supplier and trader of ecstasy pills
respectively.

Police seized 4,874 ecstasy pills from the first man,
identified as Djaf, and 90 pills from the second suspect, J.H.

J.H. claimed to be a national rowing athlete.

North Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Wisjnu Amat Sastro said on
Saturday that J.H. was arrested on Jl. Pademangan, while Djaf was
arrested after J.H. told police that he had bought the ecstasy
from Djaf.

The latter was arrested at his house in the Duta Harapan Indah
housing complex in Bekasi. While searching the residence, police
found a bag of 4,874 ecstasy pills, Wisjnu said.

"Djaf had three types of pills -- Superman, Mitsubishi and
Butterfly -- which he offered to his regular buyers," the officer
added.

Djaf admitted to having bought the pills from someone named A
Hok in a hotel in West Jakarta.

Separately, J.H. told reporters that he bought the pills for
Rp 15,000 each and planned to sell them for between Rp 20,000 and
Rp 30,000 each to customers at several discotheques in the Mangga
Besar area of West Jakarta.

"From the suspects, we hope we can develop the case and
hopefully break the drugs' distribution chain, especially in this
area," Wisjnu said. (bsr/emf)
