Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have intensified following a drone attack on a US facility in Baghdad on 10 March. The strike hit the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Centre, a key logistical and operational facility used by American diplomats, located strategically near an Iraqi military base and Baghdad International Airport.

According to security officials cited by international media, at least six drones were launched at the facility. Defence systems successfully intercepted five drones, though one reached the vicinity of the watchtower before striking the area. Despite triggering panic, no casualties were reported, and personnel within the complex were immediately ordered to take shelter.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by Iran-backed Iraqi militias operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a militia network that has previously targeted US interests in the region. This direct involvement of pro-Iran groups demonstrates their role in the increasingly complex regional conflict dynamics.

In parallel, US forces stationed at military bases in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain also came under attack, reportedly launched by Iran. Iranian media reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guards fired missiles at Al-Dhafra air base near Abu Dhabi and military facilities in Juffair, Bahrain. Early warning systems were activated across several Middle Eastern cities, including Dubai and Tel Aviv, where emergency sirens were heard.

These attacks followed a warning from US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth that Iran could face an “unprecedented day of attack” if tensions continued to escalate. The United States did not remain idle, with the US military conducting retaliatory operations that destroyed sixteen Iranian mine-laying vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital oil shipping routes. The White House previously warned that Iran would face a significant military response if it attempted to place mines in this strategic waterway.

This series of attacks has heightened concerns about broader conflict expansion in the Middle East. The involvement of pro-Iran militias, attacks on military bases, and operations in global energy trade routes indicate that the situation could develop into a larger regional crisis. World oil prices are estimated to have potential to surge to US$130 per barrel if Iran-US-Israel tensions continue to escalate.
