JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Hafiz Mahendra (25), the driver of a black Toyota Calya, admitted to driving against traffic in Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (25/2/2026) because he feared being fined by the police.
The driver, Hafiz, stated that at the time, he did not have a driving licence (SIM) or vehicle registration (STNK).
“Because I didn’t have a SIM and didn’t bring the STNK, I was afraid of the police. I was afraid of being fined,” said Hafiz, as quoted by Kompas TV, on Thursday (26/2/2026).
“I didn’t know the way; I came from Surabaya, then Karawang, and I was going to Ancol with my girlfriend,” he said.
When being chased by residents, he admitted that he did not want to stop because he was very panicked. Moreover, his car was already driving against the flow of traffic, so he continued to drive fast.
“I was driving against the flow of traffic and couldn’t stop; I was panicking (because residents were chasing me),” he said.
“(The female passenger) is still being investigated; she claims to be his girlfriend,” said Komarudin in a video shared by the Traffic Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police.
Based on information gathered by the Central Jakarta Metro Police, Hafiz is a man from Sidoarjo Regency, East Java.
The police found several pieces of evidence in the car. HM was found carrying two sharp weapons, namely a machete and a dagger, as well as a toy gun.
“Four different vehicle registration plates were found,” said Komarudin.
For his actions, HM is being charged under Article 311, paragraphs (1), (2), and (3) of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (UU LLAJ).
