DPR Chairwoman Puan Maharani has stated that the legislature is currently choosing to focus on matters of public welfare and government programme coordination rather than considering the political landscape for the 2029 presidential election. Puan believes that the uncertain global geopolitical situation also warrants attention and necessitates cooperation between the executive and legislative branches.

According to Puan, the primary priority at present is ensuring that all government policies and programmes can be implemented effectively amongst the public. She has emphasised that public interest must take precedence over long-term practical political agendas.

“Given the geopolitical situation, we are not yet thinking about 2029 politics. We are focusing on people’s affairs first, on how cooperation between the executive and legislative branches can genuinely work together for the benefit of the people,” said Puan at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, 12 March 2026.

Whilst focusing on public affairs, Puan has acknowledged that political parties and the government have already begun communicating, both formally and informally, regarding proposals for improving the future electoral system. However, she has assured that such processes will not be conducted hastily.

Puan has guaranteed that every piece of legislation produced by the DPR will involve input from various parties to ensure its usefulness to the broader public. The PDI Perjuangan politician has reminded that every regulatory discussion must adhere to constitutional mechanisms involving the two main parties: the executive and legislative branches.

“We will discuss all of these laws in the best possible manner, requesting input from all parties. Therefore, there is no need to rush. What we expect from the DPR is that all legislation produced will be beneficial to the people,” she said.
