Jakarta — House of Representatives (DPR RI) Speaker Puan Maharani affirmed that President Prabowo Subianto has a vision to support Palestinian independence, speaking at the inaugural meeting of the post-Gaza conflict Board of Peace (BoP).

Puan added that Indonesia continues to uphold its free and active foreign policy and to champion the independence of the Palestinian people.

“I believe the President already has a vision to support and implement this free and active foreign policy in the context of Palestinian independence,” Puan told reporters at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

Puan stressed that the President’s presence at international forums in the United States would not shift Indonesia’s stance on the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Separately, Puan noted that today’s international cooperation framework is built upon shared norms and commitments, ranging from economic standards that measure competitiveness and sustainability, to social values that uphold human dignity, through to the principles of democracy and human rights as the foundation of civilised politics.

“In this context, development is not merely measured by growth figures, but by the quality of human life and the social justice experienced by the people,” Puan said.

“Because we live in an interdependent world, Indonesia must strengthen its national resilience and competitiveness in order to maintain a strong bargaining position within the global order,” she added.

Puan explained that the beginning of 2026 has been marked by heightened tensions in international relations, both in the form of armed conflicts and the escalation of trade wars disrupting supply chains and slowing global economic growth.

“The government must optimise Indonesia’s strategic position as President of the UN Human Rights Council and within the Board of Peace to make a tangible contribution towards resolving the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advancing the realisation of Palestinian independence,” Puan asserted.

According to Puan, this is in line with the UN Charter and the mandate of the Preamble to the 1945 Constitution, under which Indonesia participates in establishing world order based on independence, lasting peace, and social justice.

“This principle ensures that Indonesian diplomacy is not merely symbolic, but stands firmly upon sovereignty, equality, and respect for international law,” Puan said.
