DPR Speaker: Evaluate TNI Deployment in Conflict Areas
DPR Speaker Puan Maharani has urged the government to evaluate the deployment of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) in conflict areas after three soldiers were killed while serving on a peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon. The three fallen soldiers were Major Infantry Anumerta Zulmi Aditya Iskandar, Kopda Anumerta Farizal Rhomadhon, and Serka Anumerta Muhammad Nur Ichwan.
“The government should evaluate the assignment of TNI soldiers in conflict areas,” said the PDI Perjuangan politician at the DPR complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, 21 April 2026.
The evaluation of TNI assignments in conflict areas must be based on international best practices, encompassing mission clarity, mandates, operational readiness, and maximum protection for personnel. Puan stressed that United Nations peacekeeping operations demand political readiness, capacity, and an operational environment.
In addition, the DPR has called on the UN to conduct a credible investigation to uncover the cause of the three TNI deaths in Lebanon. “This effort is grounded in the core principles of UN peacekeeping missions, namely transparency, accountability, as well as respect for international law and human rights.”
Separately, DPR Commission I Chairman Utut Adianto stated that the government should not withdraw troops in order to honour the global peacekeeping mission as mandated by the constitution. The PDI Perjuangan politician noted that the deployment of peacekeeping forces is not intended for warfare, which is why the Indonesian military participates.
“Once we are committed there, we must not withdraw; it is best not to pull out because we are also fulfilling the preamble by contributing to world peace. This includes supporting Palestinian independence,” he said on Tuesday at the DPR.
Utut proposed that the government provide field guidance to soldiers sent to conflict areas to avoid further casualties. He hopes this can prevent a repeat of the same incident.
