Jakarta (ANTARA) - A member of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) from the Gerindra faction, Rahmawati, proposed allocating funds in the 2027 State Budget (APBN) to deliver 1,000 cinema screens in villages to boost the development of small production houses in the regions.

“Perhaps cross-sector partners could prepare fiscal incentives for small and regional production houses and allocate a budget for 1,000 village cinema screens from the 2027 APBN. This is a suggestion so that small producers can survive,” she said during the Hearing with the Working Panel on Creativity and National Film Distribution together with Commission VII of the DPR at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

She stated the government needs to support the development of small regional production houses, which still struggle to grow their businesses due to limited access to screening their films in the cinema network.

The limited access of production houses to screen films in cinema networks is also seen as potentially hindering the production of films that showcase regional talents and culture.

“Try sitting down for discussions with exhibitors before we make a film, present our ideas, tell what we want to create, and seek their input,” she said.

“By doing so, we have won one point that they will incorporate what they want into what we plan to make,” she added.

In response to the proposal, a representative of Black & White Pictures (PH) said that cinema operators have not fully opened discussion access to small production houses.

Meanwhile, a member of Commission VII of the DPR from the Golkar faction, Andhika Satya Wisastho, proposed revising Law No. 33 of 2009 on Film to align with the current conditions of the film industry.

“I think the conditions in 2009 and in 2026 are very different for Indonesian filmmaking, and at present I propose that, if possible, in the future Commission VII could also organise revisions to the film law,” he said.
