DPR Leadership Urges Thorough Investigation into Alleged Child Abuse Case at Yogyakarta Daycare
JAKARTA - Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sari Yuliati is concerned about the alleged case of child abuse at a childcare facility (daycare) in Yogyakarta City.
Sari stated that law enforcement authorities must investigate this case thoroughly, transparently, and accountably.
“We demand that the legal process proceeds professionally and imposes strict sanctions on those proven to have committed violations,” said Sari in her statement on Saturday (25/4/2026).
She encouraged relevant ministries and institutions to immediately conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the licensing system, operational standards, and oversight mechanisms for all daycares in Indonesia.
“This incident must serve as a momentum for improving the child protection system, particularly in childcare facilities. The state must ensure that every child receives a safe, decent environment that supports their growth and development,” she said.
On the other hand, the public is urged to be more selective in choosing childcare services and to play an active role in monitoring and promptly reporting any indications of violations.
Sari emphasised that she will continue to monitor child protection issues as part of the state’s responsibility to safeguard and ensure the future of the nation’s next generation.
“There must be no tolerance for any form of violence against children,” she stressed.
Yogyakarta Police recorded a total of 103 child victims, with 53 of them confirmed to have experienced physical abuse.
“If we look at the total number, it’s 103 children. But for those we observed with abusive actions, it’s around 53 people. Based on data, yes,” said Head of Criminal Investigation at Yogyakarta Police, Commissioner Rizky Adrian, when met at Yogyakarta Police Headquarters on Saturday.
Adrian said that hundreds of children were in a very vulnerable age range, from infants aged 0 to toddlers.
Police investigations revealed that the Little Aresha daycare had been operating for at least more than one year.
Most caregivers working there were also known to have considerable tenure.
Nevertheless, the police have not yet disclosed in detail the motive behind the cruel actions of the caregivers.
“A full release will be made on Monday morning,” Adrian said briefly.
