The House of Representatives’ Hajj Oversight Team has raised concerns over overcrowded pilgrim rooms following an inspection at Hotel 502 Safwat Alshuruq in Makkah’s Sector 5 Raudhah area on 22 May.

DPR member Sri Wulan stated the hotel, which accommodates around 6,700 pilgrims, is a key site for monitoring Indonesian pilgrim accommodation services in Makkah.

Field inspections revealed rooms housing five pilgrims, breaching the agreed four-person standard. The team has called for immediate evaluation to prevent further spread.

“We observed rooms with five occupants despite the initial agreement of four. This must be addressed to maintain service standards for pilgrims,” said the NasDem Party faction politician.

Wulan stressed that overcrowding affects not only accommodation facilities but also pilgrims’ physical wellbeing, especially given the intense heat and demanding Hajj rituals requiring adequate rest.

She highlighted the importance of comfortable accommodation ahead of the Hajj’s peak phase, when activities intensify and physical recovery becomes critical.

Although exact figures on overcapacity rooms remain unconfirmed, the team has urged Hajj organisers to verify and monitor services to uphold standards.

Wulan reiterated that continuous on-site inspections at pilgrim hotels are essential to ensure service quality matches administrative reports and is genuinely experienced by pilgrims.

“This oversight is crucial to ensure services comply with agreed commitments and standards,” she added.
