DPR Demands Police Clarification on AI-Generated Photo of Andrie Yunus Attacker
The Head of DPR Commission III, Habiburokhman, has called upon the police to clarify and counter misinformation circulating on social media, specifically an image claimed to depict the perpetrator of the acid attack against KontraS activist Andrie Yunus, which he has confirmed is an artificial intelligence fabrication.
“I am calling on the police, particularly the public relations division, to actively counter and explain to the public any inaccurate information developments,” Habiburokhman said at a meeting of Commission III in the DPR Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday, 16 March 2026.
Habiburokhman stated that he had questioned the photograph, which was taken from a screenshot of CCTV footage, and had confirmed with police that the image was AI-generated. The Gerindra Party politician warned that the effects of such AI-generated content are dangerous if left unchecked and spread. He expressed concern that such fabricated images could confuse the public and potentially lead to misidentification. “What I am worried about is that it could lead to misunderstanding among society. If someone happens to look similar, they could be beaten by a mob,” he said.
Habiburokhman appreciated public enthusiasm in apprehending the perpetrator but cautioned against good intentions creating further problems.
Police have denied the authenticity of the photograph depicting the suspected perpetrators of the acid attack on Andrie Yunus, the Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, which has been circulating on social media. The image, purportedly showing two suspected acid attack perpetrators, has sparked widespread discussion on social media.
Roby Saputra, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of Central Jakarta Police, stated that the photograph circulating on social media was an edited image created using artificial intelligence. “The photograph circulating is an AI edit or not the actual perpetrator,” he said when reached on Sunday, 15 March 2026.
Saputra added that the image circulating on social media does not match the footage captured by surveillance cameras or CCTV. “It does not match the CCTV screenshot or witness statements,” he said.
