DPR Commission VII Urges Broadcasting Institutions to Encourage Public Information Filtering

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Vice Chair of Commission VII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Evita Nursanty, has requested that government-owned broadcasting institutions not only combat hoax information but also actively educate the public to filter information before sharing it.

Currently, she noted, much of the information on social media consists of disinformation, misinformation, or hoaxes. She added that opinions arising on social media are even beginning to overshadow facts.

“People find it very easy to just share, share, and share news; it is that simple. They must be able to filter existing news before they share it,” Evita stated at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“We must ensure they do not become provoked first, only for everything to be corrected after the fact,” she said.

She believes that government-owned broadcasting institutions have a significant role to play in correcting false information before it spreads through society.

“This is the role of public information institutions; they are expected to provide proper education to the community and promote media literacy,” she concluded.
