DPR Commission I Regrets Vulgar Deepfake Case in West Kalimantan, Urges Komdigi to Take Action
A student at Tanjungpura University (Untan) in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, with the initials RY, edited photos of his friends using deepfake technology to create inappropriate images. DPR Commission I regrets this vulgar deepfake case.
“DPR Commission I regrets the occurrence of the misuse of digital technology that degrades women’s dignity and causes unrest in society,” said Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission I, Dave Laksono, to reporters on Friday (May 15, 2026).
According to him, editing photos using deepfake technology for indecent purposes is a violation of ethics and morals and has the potential to violate the law. He explained that the digital space should be a healthy platform for innovation and creativity, not an arena for exploitation that harms human rights.
“DPR Commission I encourages the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) to immediately take concrete steps to strengthen regulations, supervision, and digital literacy related to the use of deepfake technology,” said Dave.
For Dave, it is important to have an early detection mechanism, strict action against violations, and public education so that the public understands the risks and impacts of the misuse of this technology.
“DPR Commission I also supports the legal process that is currently underway at the campus level and by law enforcement officials, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions, including Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning Electronic Information and Transactions in conjunction with Law No. 19 of 2016. Anyone who is proven to have committed harmful acts with digital technology must be held accountable for the consequences,” he added.
Dave said that DPR Commission I is committed to strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation in dealing with the phenomenon of deepfakes and other manipulative technologies. With clear regulations, strict supervision, and massive digital literacy, the nation can keep the digital space safe, healthy, and oriented towards the interests of the people.
Chronology of the Case
As reported by detikKalimantan on Friday (May 15, 2026), one of the victims, with the initials S, said that RY and his classmates were conducting a practical session for the Microbiology Systematics course last week. At that time, RY’s friend borrowed his cellphone for documentation purposes.
After finishing taking pictures, RY’s friend allegedly opened the gallery to check the results of the practical documentation. However, they instead found many photos of women that they recognized stored on the cellphone.
“When they opened the gallery, his friend was surprised to see so many faces of people he knew. After checking, it turned out that there were many inappropriate photos that had been edited by the perpetrator,” he said.
A few days later, the case finally spread on social media and student chat groups. S admitted that he was surprised when he woke up and found that his chat group was buzzing with discussions about the alleged vulgar deepfake.
S revealed that the victims were mostly friends of RY, including high school friends and classmates from the same major and year. There were even AI edits that showed RY’s girlfriend as if she was kissing another man.
