Don't Underestimate Hairline Cracks on Car Rims
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Besides dents, another common problem with car rims is hairline cracks. At first glance, this damage appears minor and is often overlooked by car owners. However, even small cracks on the rim can pose a risk if left unaddressed.
“Here’s the thing: not all cracks immediately cause air to leak from the tire. Some cracks, often called hairline cracks, may not leak air when checked,” he told Kompas.com recently.
“However, since it’s a crack, there’s a possibility that if it experiences pressure at the same point again, the crack could widen or even suddenly break,” he said.
Runang explained that hairline cracks usually appear due to strong impacts, such as hitting a pothole at high speed or hitting the edge of a curb.
If the car hits a pothole in the same area again, the risk of the crack worsening or breaking increases. This condition is certainly dangerous, especially if it occurs while the car is traveling at high speed.
“It could widen or break immediately because there’s already a ‘line’ of weakness. When it’s hit again in that area, the impact will certainly not be good,” said Runang.
For minor cracks, workshops usually use a special aluminum welding method, depending on the type of rim material.
After the welding process, the rim is smoothed, machined if necessary to restore precision, and then tested for leaks and balance.
However, it should be noted that not all cracks can be repaired. If the crack is too long, located at a critical structural point, or has been repeatedly welded, it is usually recommended to replace it.
