Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Prices of premium packaged cooking oil in modern retail outlets have been observed to have increased. Based on monitoring by CNBC Indonesia at several minimarkets in the Setiabudi area, South Jakarta, 2-litre cooking oil is now sold at higher prices, and stock for certain sizes is starting to become limited.

At Alfamart outlets, Sunco brand cooking oil in 2-litre size is priced at Rp46,300. Meanwhile, the Tropical brand in the same size is sold for Rp45,400. At Indomaret outlets, premium cooking oil prices are also tending higher. Sunco brand in 2-litre size is sold for Rp47,000, while Bimoli in 2-litre size is priced at Rp45,500.

Retail employees acknowledge that cooking oil prices have indeed been rising in recent times.

“Yes, all cooking oil prices are rising, the 1-litre items are not available, but that has also gone up, to around Rp23,000,” said Sari (a pseudonym), one of the Alfamart employees met by CNBC Indonesia at the location, on Monday (20/4/2026).

According to her, the price increase for premium packaged cooking oil has occurred recently. “It just rose recently,” she said.

Nevertheless, Sari was reluctant to detail the previous prices. “It varies (the prices), but indeed all cooking oil prices are rising,” she stated.

Regarding the cause of the price increase, she suspects it is due to rising packaging costs, causing the product price to follow suit at the consumer level.

“Yes, possibly, it seems because of plastic, but I’m not sure,” she added.

The same sentiment was expressed by an Indomaret employee met by CNBC Indonesia. She said that currently, the available cooking oil stock is only the 2-litre size, with the 1-litre packaging empty.

“Yes, only the 2-litre left, the one-litre is empty,” said Jena.

She also mentioned that the price increase for cooking oil is not only for the 2-litre packaging size, but the 1-litre size has also experienced an increase. Although currently, stock for that size is not available. For the previous price of 1-litre cooking oil, she said it was still around Rp21,500.

“Yesterday it was Rp21,500, but I don’t know now. Because all cooking oil prices are rising,” she said.

She emphasised that the trend of rising prices for premium packaged cooking oil is widespread. “Indeed, all cooking oil prices are rising,” she said.

However, she also does not yet know the exact cause of the price increase. “I’m not sure, maybe (because plastic prices have risen, apparently),” she added.

Cooking Oil Price Comparison Data

Based on data from the Market and Basic Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP) of the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) as of 20 April 2026, the national price of premium packaged palm cooking oil is recorded at Rp21,755 per litre. This price has risen 4.31% compared to 17 April 2026, which was at Rp20,856 per litre.

On a monthly basis, compared to 2 March 2026 (Rp21,094 per litre), the price has also increased by around 3.13%.

Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the price of premium packaged cooking oil has risen significantly. On 17 April 2025, the price was recorded at Rp20,856 per litre, lower than the current position of Rp21,755 per litre.

This means that within a year, the price of premium packaged cooking oil has risen by around Rp899 per litre, reflecting a continuing upward trend.

This increase aligns with the field trend, where prices in modern retail have also adjusted, even accompanied by stock limitations for certain sizes.

In addition to premium packaged cooking oil, SP2KP data also shows that bulk cooking oil has risen 8.25%, from previously Rp17,983 per litre on 17 April 2026, to Rp19,467 per litre today.
