JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of the Legislation Body Working Committee (Panja Baleg) of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Abidin Fikri, emphasised that the Legislation Body’s move to bring the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (RUU PPRT) to the plenary session on Tuesday (21/4/2025) represents a form of legal protection for millions of vulnerable workers.

“This approval marks a crucial momentum towards the DPR’s plenary approval on Tuesday, 21 April 2026, to promptly realise legal protection for millions of vulnerable workers,” Fikri told reporters on Monday (20/4/2026).

According to him, the majority of them are women from low-income families who often work without fair wages, without leave, and with minimal social security.

“This bill, a DPR initiative, will change their fate with provisions for fair wage rights, humane working hours, and protection from harassment,” he said.

“I am proud that Baleg has approved it, and tomorrow we must ensure that the factions unanimously approve it in the DPR plenary,” he added.

For him, the passage of the RUU PPRT is not merely a constitutional obligation but a moral call to uphold social justice in the spirit of Pancasila.

“The plenary approval on 21 April 2026 must be the top priority so that this law can take effect quickly and protect domestic workers from exploitation,” he explained.

Fikri underlined that this Baleg decision signals the DPR’s commitment to reforming the labour sector, as well as the state’s concrete efforts to provide legal protection for a group that has long operated in the private sphere but plays a crucial role in society.

This agreement was reached in the plenary meeting on the RUU PPRT between the DPR RI Legislation Body and the Government held on Monday (20/4/2026).

“Can the results of the discussion on the Revised Bill on Domestic Workers Protection be further processed in accordance with statutory regulations if approved?” said Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Sufmi Dasco in the meeting on Monday.

All meeting participants immediately expressed agreement, accompanied by the gavel strike signifying approval.

“With this approval, a plenary session will be scheduled in the near future. Insha Allah, tomorrow,” Dasco stressed.

Meanwhile, government representatives present included Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas, Deputy Minister for State Secretariat Bambang Eko Suhariyanto, and Deputy Minister of Manpower Afriansyah Noor.

DPR Baleg leaders included Baleg Chairman Bob Hasan, Deputy Baleg Chairman Sturman Pandjaitan, and Ahmad Iman Sukri.

With this determination, the RUU PPRT will be passed in the nearest plenary session held by the DPR RI.
