Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Domestic bicycle production is expected to reach a record high of 3.5 million next year after several bicycle makers plan to raise their production capacity, a spokesman said.
The annual domestic bicycle production which now reached less than 2 million units still fell short of the market demand, Chairman of the Indonesian Bicycle Producers Association (AIPI) Prihadi said here on Wednesday.
The domestic demand for bicycles currently reached 6 million units per year and tended to increase all the time, he said.
The rising demand for bicycles was among others the result of successful campaigns to restrict the use of fossil fuels and reduce air pollution. As a result, many residents switched to bicycles which were environmentally friendly, he said.
To meet the rising demand for bicycles the country imported bicycles particularly from China, he said.
"Most of the imported bicycles come from China," he said.
Separately, on Wednesday, Peter Mulyadi, promotion manager of PT Insera Sena which produces bicycles with Polygon brand, said the higher demand for bicycles in the domestic market had prompted his company to reduce its bicycle exports.
In the 1990s PT Inser Sena`s bicycle exports reached 90 percent of its overall production. But the figure fell to 70 percent in the 2000s, he said.
"With the increasing demand for bicycles, we may slash our exports to 60 percent or 50 percent," he said.
The company currently produced an average of 500 thousand bicycles per year, he said.
