Dollar falls to a new closing low of 100.40 yen in Tokyo
TOKYO (AFP): The dollar fell to a new local closing low of 100.40 yen in Tokyo yesterday, down 0.91 yen from 101.31 yen the previous day.
After opening at 101.11 yen, compared with New York's late Thursday quote of 101.40 yen, the dollar moved narrowly above 101 yen in quite trading during the morning.
But it slipped below the 101 yen level in the afternoon on Bank of Japan governor Yasushi Mieno's reported remarks suggesting central bank intervention alone cannot arrest the yen's further appreciation, dealers said.
Although the central bank apparently carried out dollar-buying intervention on the day's market, Mieno's remarks spoiled such efforts, a bank dealer said.
The dollar ranged from 100.35 yen to 101.15 yen during the day's session, with spot turnover totaling US$8.565 billion, against $6.478 billion in the previous session.
The mark closed at 1.5927 to the dollar, compared with the previous day's 1.6065.
