Do Vehicle Imports from India Threaten the Local Industry?

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Saleh Husin, has said that Indian commercial vehicle manufacturers should also build factories in Indonesia if they are serious about the Merah Putih Village Cooperative programme.

“If Indian manufacturers are serious, they should build factories in Indonesia, just like Toyota, Suzuki, Honda, Daihatsu, Mitsubishi, Hino, Hyundai, DFSK, BYD and VinFast. The government needs to ensure that all businesses operate on a level playing field,” he said in an official statement on Wednesday (25/2/2026).

Building Indian vehicle factories in Indonesia would create fair competition.

For information, PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara will import approximately 105,000 commercial vehicles from India for the Merah Putih Cooperative. Two manufacturers supplying these vehicles are Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

In addition, the negative impact would not stimulate the economy and would be contrary to the industrialisation programme being promoted by the government.

“The 8 per cent economic growth target set by President Prabowo may not be achieved if the national industry does not grow,” he said.
