Jakarta — The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has outlined a series of solutions to ease the burden on Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi, with one key approach being the reduction of waste at source.

Asep Kuswanto, Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Agency, stated that the more waste can be separated and reduced from households, offices, and residential areas, the lower the pressure on TPST Bantargebang as the final processing location.

“Waste reduction at source is an important part of Jakarta’s long-term waste management strategy, whilst also reducing the volume of waste entering the final processing facility each day,” Asep said in a statement in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Waste reduction at source can be implemented through simple steps that residents can apply, namely separating waste into biodegradable, recyclable materials, residue, and household hazardous waste categories.

Additionally, residents are encouraged to compost food waste and reuse items that still have value.

“These measures have proven effective in reducing the volume of waste that must be transported to processing facilities and final disposal sites,” Asep said.

However, Asep emphasised that processing technology alone is insufficient without active community participation in reducing waste from its source.

Therefore, the DKI Provincial Government is calling on all residents to build a culture of waste separation and reduction in daily life.

“If residents are more active in separating and reducing waste, then Jakarta’s waste management system will become increasingly sustainable and the burden on TPST Bantargebang can continue to decrease because only residue will be sent there,” Asep stated.

TPST Bantargebang is recorded as receiving an average of 7,354 tons of waste per day from the DKI Jakarta region, whilst the total daily load at the waste processing facility reaches 7,734 tons of waste.
