DKI Offers Free Public Transport to Select Destinations During Eid al-Fitr
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has invited all residents to celebrate Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah by staying in the capital rather than returning to their hometowns, introducing a series of programmes to encourage this shift, including free public transport fares.
The governor announced that fares on Transjakarta, Mikrotrans, MRT, and LRT Jakarta will be free, enabling residents to easily access entertainment and shopping destinations throughout the city.
“Residents can take advantage of free public transport during Eid to visit attractions,” Pramono stated on Sunday (1 March).
Additional incentives include discounts of 50 to 70 per cent at shopping centres for Jakarta residents on the eve of Eid, and special discounts for hotel stays during the 1447 Hijriah celebration.
“This Eid, we are adopting the theme ‘Homecoming to Jakarta’. We invite everyone to celebrate Eid here,” said Pramono.
The governor noted that residents can maintain family connections with relatives in their hometowns through modern communication technology, such as video calls on smartphones, even without travelling.
“Residents can video call their families throughout the day,” he explained.
Pramono argued that staying in Jakarta during Eid preserves residents’ savings, as travel to hometowns is expensive and exhausting, involving journeys of tens to hundreds of kilometres.
“Travelling by car or motorcycle is tiring and drains savings,” he said.
Nevertheless, the provincial government is also facilitating residents who wish to travel home through a free homecoming programme for 26,500 people during the Eid celebration.
“For those who wish to travel home, they are welcome to do so, and those who choose to stay will receive these facilities,” Pramono concluded.
