DKI Jakarta temporarily closes Zone 4A of Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility following landslide
Jakarta — The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has temporarily closed Zone 4A at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) in Bekasi City, West Java, following a landslide of waste materials that claimed four lives.
“Only Zone 4A is closed. However, Zone 3 continues to be used for waste reception,” said Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo at City Hall on Monday.
Pramono stated that the closure was implemented to ensure that handling and recovery operations in the landslide area could proceed safely. Meanwhile, routine waste transportation operations from Jakarta continue, with waste being diverted to alternative zones.
The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared two temporary disposal sites to receive waste from Jakarta. These two additional zones are being set up on a temporary basis whilst the landslide area in Zone 4A is rehabilitated.
The government hopes recovery work can be accelerated so that operations in that zone return to normal. “Zone 3 and two new zones are being prepared as temporary facilities whilst we await the rehabilitation of Zone 4A,” Pramono said.
Pramono explained that the landslide occurred in Zone 4A at 14:30 local time. With heavy rainfall in the area, water infiltrated the waste heap at Bantargebang. The moist conditions eventually caused the waste to slip, triggering the landslide.
The incident resulted in the operational access road and a 40-metre stretch of the Ciketing River being blocked by waste materials.
Following an inspection of conditions at Bantargebang earlier that morning, Pramono immediately requested that the situation be normalised as quickly as possible.
“Particularly the Ciketing River needs to be restored to normal conditions. That area is completely blocked and the access road is likewise obstructed, which is clearly visible in the field. We will move to normalise it immediately,” he said.
