Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Blood Donor Unit (UDD) of the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) DKI Jakarta Province is maximising blood services for cancer patients to commemorate World Cancer Day 2026.

"We are committed to supporting safe, high-quality and sufficient blood services for cancer patients," said the Head of Blood Services at PMI DKI Jakarta Province, Siti Rachmi, in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Siti said World Cancer Day serves as an important moment to raise public awareness of cancer risks, whilst strengthening commitment to prevention, early detection and the provision of equitable health services for all segments of society.

The commemoration of World Cancer Day is a reminder of the importance of collaboration in supporting cancer patients. Blood services are an inseparable part of cancer patient therapy.

On this World Cancer Day occasion, the UDD PMI DKI Jakarta Province continues to provide safe and quality blood, particularly for Jakarta residents. "We also invite the public to show support through regular blood donation as an expression of humanitarian solidarity," she said.

Similar activities are expected to continue to be enhanced as a manifestation of humanitarian values wrapped in professionalism in the field of health services, particularly blood services in hospitals.

"We are committed to providing the best services in the humanitarian field, including ensuring blood stock availability for cancer patients," she said.

Furthermore, as a blood provider through Hospital Blood Banks (BDRS), the UDD PMI DKI Jakarta Province plays a strategic role in guaranteeing the availability of safe and quality blood.

Blood products provided include leukoreduced packed red cells (PRC), leukodepleted PRC and apheresis platelets. All products have undergone screening for Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTI) using chemiluminescent immunoassay (ChLIA) and nucleic acid test (NAT) methods.

Beyond that, the UDD PMI DKI Jakarta Province also conducted humanitarian visits to cancer patients at Pasar Minggu Regional General Hospital and MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi.

"This activity is a tangible expression of support for optimising blood services in hospitals," she said.

The commemoration falls under the auspices of the Paris Charter Against Cancer, which was declared on 4 February 2000 as a global commitment to reducing cancer morbidity and mortality.

The World Cancer Day theme for the 2025–2027 period is "United by Unique", which places people at the centre of cancer care.
