DKI Jakarta DPRD Member: Waste Management Must Not Rely Solely on Central Policy
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Member of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta Regional House of Representatives, Nabilah Aboe Bakar Alhabsyi, has urged the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government to provide greater budgetary support to the Suku Dinas Lingkungan Hidup (Environmental Service Office) in the five administrative cities. She argued that waste management cannot continue to rely on centralised policy, and that governance must be strengthened at the regional level so problems can be resolved more quickly. ‘Heads of the Environmental Service Offices must be equipped with adequate budgets and systems so they can resolve waste issues in their respective areas. Do not leave everything to central policy,’ Nabilah said at the DKI Jakarta DPRD on Thursday, 21 May 2026. As a result, on-the-ground handling has been slow. Nabilah urged that waste management be strengthened from the district (kecamatan) and sub-district (kelurahan) levels. Strengthening at the regional level is important amid rising volumes of waste in Jakarta. With a system closer to the source, handling can be faster and not pile up at the end. The PKS faction member also said there is a need to shift from centralised to region-based patterns. From sorting, processing of organic waste, to reducing residues should be achievable at the kecamatan and kelurahan levels. ‘Yesterday it was outlined that going forward waste should be finished in each respective region. Do not burden Bantargebang with everything. The kecamatan and kelurahan must begin to be strengthened as the basis of waste management that can be resolved directly,’ said Nabilah. She hopes this step will make Jakarta’s waste management more effective, not only relying on the final disposal site, and will reduce the burden on Bantargebang TPST, which has been rising.
