DKI in a week: Peak Lebaran exodus twice as traffic secured at tourism sites
Jakarta — Several significant and noteworthy events have occurred in Jakarta over the past week, ranging from the Jakarta Provincial Government’s prediction of two peak Lebaran exodus periods in 2026 on 13 March and 18 March, to traffic officers securing key locations during the holiday period.
The Jakarta Provincial Government predicted that the peak Lebaran exodus in 2026 would occur twice: on 13 March, coinciding with the start of school holidays, and on 18 March, which would be dominated by workers including civil servants, state-owned enterprise employees, and private sector staff. The Head of the Road Transport Terminal Management Unit at the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Zulkifli, stated that the return exodus was also estimated to be divided into two phases: 24 March and 28 March.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has deployed Transportation Agency officers to secure traffic at tourism sites in the capital during the exodus and Lebaran holiday period in 2026. Listiyaning Handayani, Head of the Transportation Data and Information Centre at the Jakarta Transportation Agency, noted that whilst not everyone travels home, some people visit tourist attractions, and officers have been deployed to ensure traffic safety during the period.
East Jakarta City Government discovered that 27 of 57 padel courts operating in its jurisdiction lacked proper permits. East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin stated that approximately 30 of the 57 padel courts had obtained the necessary permits, whilst 27 remained unauthorised.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has urged residents to ensure that children travelling during the Lebaran exodus have completed their full immunisation schedule, including the measles vaccine, to protect them against various viruses and bacteria. The Head of the Epidemiological Surveillance and Immunisation Section at the Jakarta Health Agency, Budi Setiawan, stressed the importance of vaccination or practising intensified clean and healthy living behaviours whilst in home villages.
The Metro Jaya Police deployed 6,812 personnel to secure 1,647 locations during Operation Ketupat 2026, including banks, pawn shops, and Pertamina depots. Metro Jaya Police Chief Senior General Asep Edi Suheri stated that the operation would run from 13 March to 25 March, securing facilities across the Metro Jaya Police jurisdiction.
