JAKARTA - A member of Commission D of the DKI Jakarta DPRD from the PKS Faction, Nabilah Aboebakar Alhabsyi, believes that the mandatory waste sorting movement in Jakarta will struggle to operate effectively if government offices have not yet provided a tangible example to the public.

She expressed this in response to the Jakarta Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) regarding the household waste sorting movement, which began on Sunday (10/5/2026).

“If we want residents to be disciplined (in sorting waste), it must start from the government offices. As long as waste from homes remains mixed, the burden downstream will continue to accumulate,” said Nabilah in her statement to Kompas.com via short message on Monday (11/5/2026).

“The government must be present not only through appeals, but through real examples. Start from government offices first, then the public will believe and join the movement,” she added.

Nabilah also highlighted Jakarta’s waste issues, which to this day still rely on downstream handling, particularly at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST).

According to her, the main problem lies upstream because waste sorting at the source has not yet operated optimally.

“Jakarta cannot continue to rely on Bantargebang; this is a momentum, let’s utilise it with various solution-oriented approaches so that the waste problem can be resolved at the upstream level,” she stated.

Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung signed Governor’s Instruction (Ingub) Number 5 of 2026 on the Waste Sorting and Processing Movement from the Source.

According to Pramono, the regulation serves as the basis for Jakarta residents to begin sorting waste from their homes, and it will later be implemented together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

“I have signed the governor’s instruction for the sorting process, and in the near future we will collaborate with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for the declaration of waste sorting in Jakarta,” said Pramono at Jakarta City Hall on Monday (4/5/2026).

“Hopefully next week this movement becomes a massive effort carried out by all administrative cities in Jakarta,” Pramono added.

In addition, the DKI Provincial Government is also preparing waste processing into electrical energy as part of improving the waste management system in Jakarta.

The waste sorting movement was then declared by Pramono along with the launch of Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary (HUT) in the Car Free Day (CFD) area on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said, Sunday (10/5/2026).

According to him, the movement was carried out simultaneously in five administrative city areas and the Thousand Islands.

“And this activity is not half-hearted because it runs simultaneously in five cities and also in the Thousand Islands to carry out waste sorting,” he said.
